Should Churches Target Specific Demographics?

I recently moved and am in the process of finding a new church. In doing research and visiting churches, one thing that’s surprised me is how is how each church seems to have a target demographic: student, young professional, middle age, kids, no kids, asian, black, white, etc.

You name it, there seems to be a church out there for you. Oddly enough though, most—if not all—of them purport to value the diversity in their congregations. Do you think that churches should target specific demographics?

  • Well, in light of the implications of 1 Corinthians 1:10-13 and 3:1-4 (especially the latter with Paul’s criticism of their human focus), and Galatians 3:27-29 where Paul pretty much states that there are no demographics in Christ, I don’t think the church should be targeting demographics. That phrase “targeting demographics” just reeks of marketing lingo anyway.

  • No Demographics ! Ya can not buy Gods Love, target it or, Raise the bar to a higher standard? That’s marketing. Lead and take care of your own relationship with Christs in his love, his words, not yours and, you will be the higher standard that others desire. All age groups will see this. Many use their knowledge of a persons past to ridicule and belittle them. Your job is to deliver the mail in Jesus name. Anger and pride issues be gone. Teach having more life in the time your here vs the time of your life. Prov.5:15-21 God dose not miss a move you make. G.B.Y.D

A church home like anything else that you do in this walk of faith should be done thru prayer. Ask the Lord to show you where He would have you to worship. Sometimes His answers may surprise you because His ways are not our ways. We have to trust and obey, Father knows best. Lol!

Well sometimes in the present times targeting demographics is simply trying to reach those who have not yet been reached. If that is so, then why not? But is it the case lately? Do we target those who have not heard the word or making money? But has Paul states there are no demographics in Christ it is true. But your intention of going demographics should be stated well and be well intentioned

I don’t think churches should base their decision soley on demographics. But they should definitely be looking at them. How else do you know who you are really ministering to if you don’t? Because Churches are each unique they will appeal to different types of people, you can not ignore that fact and demographics help you know your audience so you can better reach them with the message of the Gospel

    Hello

No I do not think churches should target specific demograpics. We are all children of Christ! ANd there are no demographics in Christ.

I don’t think a church should be demographic but we are talking about human beings that will favor one thing over another, I don’t think good pastors frown on certain subjects but are less likely to bring them up. For example my pastor will go on for hours about the different kinds of prayer and how important prayer groups are but almost never bring up prophecy in the church today.

Absolutely! Aim at nothing and you will hit it everytime. Unless your church has a parish requirement, people are free to choose from a variety of group and whether you want to accept it or not, we all have biasis. That is not bad as long as it is not exclusive or predudicial then do it. Be open to all, love all, but know what you are doing and in all things pray about. Is evangelism any different? E1, E2, E3 deals with barriers and openness to the gospel. We saw that our community was underserving immigrant Indians (from Inida). So guess what, we have made specific, intential choices to resource and TARGET the Indian community in our neighborhood. Just because you relate the concept to business or marketing, doesn’t mean it is without truth. Look at the Bible . . . we have 4 Gospels that each were developed and targeted at different communities of people.

I don’t think churches should concetrate in searching demograpics, what should be done is just to give groly to God and pray him with all our heart!

  • andre says:

no,because like judy said we are all children of the almighty GOD and Jesus said that even on some rocks it can be made sons of God.

  • I don’t think the aim should be to target on a particular demographic group but I do feel the the Lord has anointed some churches to especially be effective with some target groups such as the youth or even middle aged adults. With much prayer God will build His church and give higher anointings for particular pastors to be more effective in particular demographic groupings. Often I have seen members of particular churches reflect the mindset and attitude of the leaders.

Yes, God came to be with us, for all of us & full of love, for all of us!

  • Sam Klahn says:

you cannot split Gods love into demographics. God wont see “Asian guy, black guy, etc” He sees “Believer, non believer” those are the only 2 demographics.
