If we had the ability to save ourselves, we could boast that we don't need God. But the truth is that we're helpless before sin, and our own good works aren't enough to save us, so any such boasting is foolishness. It is the gift of God--grace--that saves us through faith. Ephesians 2:8-9 (New International Version) 8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast.
