In Judges, Gideon asks God for a sign as an assurance that God really is going to use Gideon to save Israel. He lays out a fleece and asks God to make it the only thing wet with dew in the morning. He was able to wring out a bowl full of water from the fleece the next morning. God puts us in situations where, like Gideon, we're left saying, "If there's a victory here, it's going to have absolutely nothing to do with me." Gideon, like many of the judges of the Old Testament, is a curious hero. He wanted tangible evidence of God's favor before he carried out his tasks--and he asked for it, more than once. This story of Gideon's requests for proof and God's patient responses makes for an enlightening read.
