We may think lying is no big deal. It is to God, and we're going to answer to Him some day. On the Bible list of "six things the Lord hates," lying is the only one that appears twice in Proverbs 6:16-19. And in our word today from the Word of God in Psalm 101:7, He bluntly declares that "no one who practices deceit will dwell in My house." God is a God of truth. Lying sets God against me. Dishonesty is a very big deal. Do not lie - a Christian perspectivehttp://biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus%2019:11&version=NIV2009-09-20T13:30:38-05:00
Truth and honesty are critical elements of a godly life. The Bible is clear that we're not to cheat, lie, or deceive others in any way. The Truth Alarm - #5844http://hutchcraft.com/a-word-with-you/your-hindrances/the-truth-alarm-58442009-09-10T13:26:59-05:00
Deceiving, lying, distorting the truth - it starts a spiritual fire that can do so much damage and actually end up consuming you. But inside you lives the Holy Spirit of Almighty God who Jesus called "the Spirit of truth" (John 15:26 ), and He is your inner alarm system to let you know when you've crossed from what's real into what's false. Cheating--represented here by a merchant's dishonest scales--is contrary to the lifestyle of truth that God calls us to live. There is no deceit in God, and there should be none in our everyday lives either. God is a God of truth, and He expects that His followers will be truthful in all of their dealings. Here, honesty is praised as life-saving, in contrast to lying. God's standards are to show us how much we need Jesus. Think of the cumulative effect of all the times in your life that you've told less than the truth - you broke the commandment about bearing false witness; all the times you did less than honor your parents - you blew off the commandment to honor your father and mother. Think about all the times you've had lustful thoughts. Jesus said when we do, we mentally violate the commandment against "committing adultery." Just as a missile's internal guidance system decides where it goes, so integrity always sets the course of the man or woman of God. When you decide you'll always take the high road, no matter what, it pre-makes a thousand life decisions. And it means that when you cross your finish line, you'll be able to say those two winning words - "No regrets." Years ago, I asked God to install a spiritual smoke detector in my heart - one that would go off inside me whenever I was saying something that was less than the truth. I think we all need an inner alarm like that. Because lies do so much damage if you don't put them out right away.
