Let's not be afraid to preach a separated life. Let's not be afraid to live a life that's separated from any kind of sinful lifestyle. But let's always present it as God does. It's a positive, not a negative. I'll tell you, as millions of others would, that the best of married love and friendship and intimacy isn't in the passionate days of courtship - the honeymoon - it comes from the long years of weathering storms together, facing problems, praying through situations, learning each other's languages of love. One day the sun rises on a deep trust, a belonging, a sense of safety that you can only know by staying with the same partner. Increasingly, a lot of us watch the news and think something like this, "Boy, something's wrong. Something's very wrong!" We hear about violent murders in a top-ranked high school, people doing things to other people that are unspeakable, families ripped apart, just an awful lot of garbage. It just feels like something's wrong in our world. But even closer to home - with the people we love most - sometimes it feels like something's wrong in our family, in our friends. In fact, we look at how we act ourselves all too often and think, "Something's wrong in me." ." In other words, when Jesus saw the need of these people, something happened way down deep inside the very deepest parts of His heart. He wants to give you a heart like His. And in the stress and pressures and superficiality of the world we live in, it's easy to inadvertently build a steel wall that keeps us from feeling the lostness of the people around us. But when you lose that, you've lost an essential part of what it means to have a Christ-like heart. Every wrong thing I've ever done, every lie I've ever told, every person I've ever hurt, every mean thing I've ever said, every selfish thing I've ever done, every dirty thing I've ever thought or done, and everything and everyone I've ever let be more important than God in my life. I'm cut off from God because of that sin-wall. And there's no way you or I can tear it down no matter how decent, or how religious, or how sincere we are. The only One who can do that is the very God we've rebelled against, and that's what He did the day His Son Jesus paid for our sin on the cross. There are so many good things that God wants to do in your life. He’s got love, peace and meaning that you’ve been looking for maybe your whole life. But there’s this wall. And it’s keeping you from so much God wants to give you. There's another thief who operates with that same modus operandi - Satan. He wants to steal from you your closeness to God and all the benefits that go with doing things God's way. He is, the Bible says, the "roaring lion, looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8) and the "thief" who comes "only to steal, kill and destroy." You know it can happen in summer, or any time when your guard is down, or you’re away from people who know you, or you have more time on your hands. It’s called a spiritual vacation. It turns into a vacation from God, and maybe losing a life that matters. The most expensive vacation you’ll ever take because your enemy, the devil, never takes a vacation. All our grandson was able to come up with was woefully inadequate to pay the price. Which is a problem lots of folks have with God -- with trying to get their sins, their mistakes forgiven -- with trying to be good enough to get into God's heaven when they die. But it's "not really money." As sincere as many of us may be, we don't have the only thing that will get us to heaven - a way to pay for all the sins of our life. Because the Bible makes it clear that the price for our sins is a spiritual death penalty; being cut off forever from the God we've disobeyed and neglected. A.W. "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers; for what fellowship hath righteausiess with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?" (2 Cor. 6:14-18) This passage gives utterance to a Divine exhortation for those belonging to Christ to hold aloof from all intimate...
