List the most significant Christian preachers and leaders in the English-speaking world of the 19th century, and Charles Haddon Spurgeon will probably be near the top. While we may grudgingly acknowledge the merit of such a case, for the most part, we find such an incident almost incredible. Can laughter really be that good for us? The Bible definitely supports such a notion. C.H. Spurgeon : A Defense of Calvinismhttp://sermonindex.net/modules/articles/index.php?view=article&aid=4332008-10-08T16:14:52-05:00
The old truth that Calvin preached, that Augustine preached, that Paul preached, is the truth that I must preach to-day, or else be false to my conscience and my God. I cannot shape the truth; I know of no such thing as paring off the rough edges of a doctrine. John Knox's gospel is my gospel... C.H. Spurgeon : All of Gracehttp://sermonindex.net/modules/articles/index.php?view=article&aid=13442008-01-09T09:43:36-05:00
OF THE THINGS which I have spoken unto you these many years, this is the sum. Within the circle of these words my theology is contained, so far as it refers to the salvation of men. I rejoice also to remember that those of my family who were ministers of Christ before me preached... C.H. LAST Sabbath morning we addressed you upon the gracious operations of the Holy Spirit in the believer, and upon the glorious fad of his dwelling in the hearts of the regenerate. Now, it frequently happens that when we discourse upon the work of the Holy Spirit, there are... C.H. Spurgeon : Accidents, Not Punishmentshttp://sermonindex.net/modules/articles/index.php?view=article&aid=13362008-01-09T09:34:09-05:00
THE YEAR 1861 will have a notoriety among its fellows as the year of calamities. Just at that season when man goeth forth to reap the fruit of his labors, when the harvest of the earth is ripe, and the barns are beginning to burst with the new wheat, Death too, the mighty reaper... C.H. Spurgeon : Abel was a keeper of sheephttp://sermonindex.net/modules/articles/index.php?view=article&aid=51602008-01-09T09:33:18-05:00
As a shepherd Abel sanctified his work to the glory of God, and offered a sacrifice of blood upon his altar, and the Lord had respect unto Abel and his offering. This early type of our Lord is exceedingly clear and distinct. Like the first streak of light which tinges the east... C.H. Spurgeon : A Revival Sermonhttp://sermonindex.net/modules/articles/index.php?view=article&aid=4352008-01-09T09:21:04-05:00
GOD'S promises are not exhausted when they are fulfilled, for when once performed, they stand just as good as they did before, and we may await a second accomplishment of them. Man's promises even at the best, are like a cistern which holds but a temporary supply... C.H. Spurgeon : A Promise of Revivalhttp://sermonindex.net/modules/articles/index.php?view=article&aid=25842008-01-09T09:16:01-05:00
Originally, as you are aware, the land of Canaan was very fertile. It was a land that flowed with milk and honey. Now the land is barren, and its valleys are parched. Yet the promise stands true that one day Palestine will be as rich and fruitful as ever it was. However, while this promise...
