"Love" "Brother" in the Bible: 2 Peter 1:5-8
In a litany of qualities to aspire to, 2 Peter talks of brotherly kindness and love. The author urges us to not just rest easy once we have faith, but to continue to add to that faith so that we might be effective and productive.

Surrender in the Bible: 1 Corinthians 13:2-3
The idea of "surrendering ourselves to the flames"--becoming a martyr for Christ--seems like it would be the most extreme and holy form of devotion to God. But this passage teaches us that even such an extreme act gains us nothing, if our lives and relationships are not characterized by love.

Hate in the Bible: Luke 14:26
The strong wording in this passage is striking--does God really expect us to hate our own family? It's a rhetorical device used to emphasize the all-consuming passion with which we are to commit to God--set against God's love for us, any other emotion, no matter how positive, pales in comparison.

"Love One Another" : John 13:34-35
How can people tell we are Christians when they see us? Not by our words, or our appearance, or by the possessions we own. Jesus tells us that it is by our love that we will be recognized as Christ-followers.

"Perfect" in the BIble: Matthew 5:47-48
Christians aren't just called to behave well--they're called to behave perfectly. Anybody can be nice to somebody who's nice back to them... but only the spirit of Jesus can empower us to show true love to those who hurt or persecute us. That's the type of love Christ calls us to embody.

Rejoicing in the Bible: 1 Corinthians 13:6
This short passage shows us another characteristic of godly love: it doesn't focus on or enjoy evil, but it thrives on what is good and true.

"Love is patient" in the Bible: 1 Corinthians 13:4
This is perhaps the most famous passage about love in the Bible--chances are you've heard it at weddings and church services many times. But it remains a profound reminder of what Biblical love looks like when practiced in daily life, and a model for the type of behavior that should be evident in our lives and relationships.

"God is love" in the Bible: 1 John 4:8
If God is love, shouldn't it be the primary goal of every believer to reflect that love in our lives and relationships? If we say and do all the "right things" but somehow, in the process, fail to demonstrate love, there's a serious disconnect between us and God.

3. Paul (died ca. 65). | Christian History Institute
Christian History Institute's "In Context" explains why Paul wrote his quotable saying, "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am nothing."
