Time is a strange commodity. We stayed last month at a holiday cottage in the north Derbyshire village where I spent some years of my childhood. It’s apparently the oldest building in the village. Friends in the New World will perhaps be particularly entranced by its age – it was already 200 years old when Charles Wesley stayed there! It is part of a farm complex which later became a Moravian settlement for 50 years.

The 1000-year-old Campanile di San Marco in Venice suddenly collapsed into a heap of rubble in 1902. Mercifully, there were no casualties apart from the caretaker’s cat. There followed a time of great debate – whether, or how, to replace this beautiful bell-tower. The view which gained acceptance was summed up in the campaign slogan Come ere, dove era – meaning “As it was, where it was”, pronounced ‘COM-aira, DOV-aira’ – and a near-identical replica (with better internal strengthening) was inaugurated in 1912.

Postmodernism - how to communicate the Christian Gospel in a postmodern culture
‘Postmodernism’ is a word which simply sums up the way much of the world thinks today. It includes these viewpoints:
* There is no objective absolute truth. ‘Truth’ is what you believe it to be. Something can be “true for you, but not true for me”.
* ‘Choice’ is a big virtue in our consumer society. And choice extends to value systems, beliefs, and lifestyle choices. All are seen as equally valid. Choice of religous belief is by mix and match – whatever you feel comfortable with.

Principles of evangelism: communicating the gospel to a secular postmodern culture & worldview
As secular culture has moved further and further away from Christianity, it has become increasingly necessary to change the traditional evangelistic approach in order to communicate the Gospel. On the whole, we can't earn an opportunity to be taken seriously when talking about Jesus or God until we have connected with people on issues they are already interested in. We have to earn the right to be heard.
