Today’s Devotional: Because You Say So

Has God ever asked you to step out in faith?

There are times in our lives when we need to trust that God has our best interests in mind. Maybe God’s been telling you to take a new job, end a relationship, or do something else equally daunting. Whatever it may be, when God asks us to do something, we’re called to obey… even if we don’t fully understand why.

In this Today devotional, Jang Ho Park describes an obedient posture as one that readily uses the words, “because you say so.” When we say those four words to God, we admit that while we might not understand why he’s asking us to do something, we’re willing to trust that God has a reason:

Jesus told Simon to row out to deep water and cast his nets. Why would Jesus do that? Jesus wanted to make a strong disciple of Simon. Simon had already heard the words of Jesus and may have experienced a change in his heart. But he may also have had doubts about Jesus. In response to Jesus’ command, Simon said, “Because you say so, I will let down the nets.” And what happened? They caught so many fish that their nets nearly broke and they filled two boats to overflowing!

Those little words “because you say so” are powerful, for they capture the response of obedient faith. Like Simon, we need to listen to Jesus, and we need to trust him when he calls us to cast our nets in faith, even if it’s a strain to do so. Though fatigue, hunger, or other discomfort may make it difficult, we need to follow when he calls. He is the Lord!

Is God calling you to do something that you don’t want to do? What would it take for you to respond with the words “because you say so?”

  • Sometimes what the Lord ask us to do seemingly is so simple or doesn’t make sense to us at first. However, we should obey him because the end result is always for the greater good. As we serve God lets be reminded that without faith it is impossible to please him.We also have to trust him and most importantly obey him. Mary his mother knew this well, rememberis his first public miracle (turning water in wine)she told them, “whatever he says do,do it”.

Relationship as in a marriage? What if a marriage is between 2 people of faith?

      @ Thomas:

Something tells me that God would not send that kind of message with two people of faith; personally, i think it’s directed at premarital relationships that aren’t godly. However, I do think that it’s possible that there are certain marriages that God would want to end; I’m not sure what the circumstances would be. But for the most part, I don’t think he would have a marriage ended.

This devotional was what I truly needed to read and I know that God directed me to this website because this is my first time coming here and I didn’t even know it existed. I was told to do something from God and I don’t know why but I do know that the outcome will be great. It is hard for me to do what I was told to do,but like I just told a friend the only reason that I’m doing it until completion is because God said so. Reading this has made me stronger and has given me the will and the power I needed to complete what I was told to do. Thanks to the writer and all that are involved in this website….. God Bless You All!!!!!

I was led to this site also. I was reviewing the Sunday school lesson and wanted to read a scripture from the old testerment, and so, I decided to type “The Holy Bible”. As my eyes roamed the page I noticed the words bible way and decided to stop and seek out the scripture that I was looking for. To make a long story short. I’m trying to be obident and read and study the word more. I have learned that obidenence is better than the consequence of our actions. Like the story of David when he took Bathsheba.David didn’t realize the price he would pay for his sins and (because he said so to the death of Uriah). Death came to him at his word. But, the Mercy from GOD came and repentence was allowed because GOD said so.
